◎「亞當的蘋果」（Adam’s apple）是什麼？

作者嚴永晃旅居美國十餘年，自覺英文還行，可是洋人說的一些笑話跟成語卻是有聽沒有懂，研究之後才發現，英語許多典故都來自聖經，他便著手研究起英語當中的聖經典故。後來他的生活重心移往上海，他邊研究，邊教自己上海公司的員工英文，也在中國大陸最大的天主教應用工具「萬有真原」（原名爲「天主教小助手」）發表「妙筆釋疑」 和「品味聖經」兩個專欄，每個條目都有五、六千的點閱率，有的甚至到一萬三千。
英語可以說是當今唯一的國際共同語言，在和以英語為母語的人溝通時，
經常都會接觸到西方文化的底蘊，包括基督宗教的相關典故、信仰內涵等等，
作者身為一個基督徒，很想搭個橋，把從英語聖經衍生的典故，梗概地解說，
並旁及其文化意涵，更進一步提供英語片語的例句，方便讀者套用。
◎我們已經很常聽見的禁果，到底是什麼樹的果子，至今眾說紛紜，但是第一個說出是蘋果的，應該就是英文版聖經。可是，平平是蘋果，「亞當的蘋果」跟「你眼中的蘋果」可不是同一回事喲，還有，這兩個蘋果都不是樹上長出來的。
◎象徵和平的橄欖枝，也出自聖經典故。那你知道是誰送上橄欖枝，又是誰接住了橄欖枝？
◎「披著羊皮的狼」這也是出自聖經，耶穌提醒，要小心披著羊皮的狼，要提防偽裝成朋友的敵人，或者是看起來和善、內心卻奸詐無比的壞人。
◎作者研究英語片語中的聖經典故，還特地對照漢語當中是否有合適的成語，像是to throw pearl before the swine，直譯是把珠寶丟給豬，用「暴殄天物」也很貼切。For thirty pieces of silver，這個典故是說耶穌的門徒猶達斯為了三十塊銀錢出賣耶穌，「見利忘義」就是這類行徑。
要深入某個語言的底蘊，真的不是望文生義即可，像是有個很知名的英文片語the eleventh hour，如果以為對方說的是十一點，這誤會就大了。當朋友聊天，提到the old Adam，你納悶，沒人叫亞當啊！！！也許，這個時候他指的是聖經當中的那個亞當，那又是什麼意思呢？
